Demanda wins is a dance-spell, a play on memories of the past, an improvised step, an entry into the lama to fertilize and open paths to the future. It is a low-to-the-ground way of following the crabs—treading lightly, feigning a fall, swaying, bending, and finding a rhythm in one’s steps. At Pedra da Macumba—amidst the sewage-polluted mangrove lama, an ecosystem that transforms shit into life—this work (de)articulates the urban-mangrove territoriality of Pedra de Guaratiba and its infestation by militia groups through footwork; it acts as a way to cast a spell and untie the knots binding us to the logic of power that permeates the city of Rio de Janeiro.
